Install water-efficient showerheads

Your shower can be one of the biggest users of water in your home.

If you are using an older style showerhead, you could be using more water than you need to. Installing an efficient showerhead can make a big difference to the amount of water you use.

Choose an efficient showerhead

Water-efficient showerheads restrict the amount of water coming through and provide you with a satisfying shower.

The Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) product search helps you to compare the efficiency and flow rate of different showerheads before you buy a new one.

A WELS 3 star rated showerhead can use as little as 6 litres per minute compared to a zero rated showerhead which can use more than 15 litres of water per minute.

Check for showerhead exchange programs

Some water authorities offer free water-efficient showerheads in exchange for your old showerhead. Check with your local water authority to see if they are offering free water-efficient showerheads.

Install your showerhead

Installing a water-efficient showerhead can be easy depending on your plumbing. It should only take a few minutes for a plumber or handy person.

If you are doing it yourself, make sure you have the:

  • correct instructions
  • mains water supply turned off if necessary
  • correct plumber's thread seal tape (also known as PTFE or Teflon tape).
  • Save water
  • Save money on water and power bills
  • Use less of Australia's most precious natural resource
