Gas hot water rebate

Energy
Available: VIC
For: Home owners; Renters; Landlords [House; Apartment]

Overview

The Gas hot water rebate provides Victorian households with up to $400, or $700 for concession card holders, to replace their existing wood-fired or peak-rate electric hot water heater with a natural gas hot water system.

Additional rebates of $300 are also available to help with the costs of installing gas hot water systems into some flats and apartments.

Key eligibility

To qualify for this rebate, you must:

  • be currently using an electric hot water heater, which cannot be run on off-peak electricity, or a wood-fuelled water heater
  • not have a second, off-peak hot water system already installed
  • install the new gas system in your principal place of residence.

Homeowners, landlords and renters are eligible for the rebate. If you're renting, you have to be paying the energy bills and you'll need your landlord's permission before installing your new system.

Items covered

The rebate amount depends on your circumstances:

  • for the purchase of a 5-star instantaneous gas hot water system or a gas storage hot water system with a 4-star rating or better - $400 (or $700 for concession card holders)
  • for the installation costs of a new system if you live in a flat or apartment where there is a separate occupancy directly above or below you an additional $300.

Landlords whose tenants are concession card holders are able to access the $700 rebate amount as long as the electricity account is in the tenant's name.
