For: Home owners; Renters; Landlords [House]
Overview
The Aurora Energy Net Metering Buyback Scheme rewards residential and small business customers who install small-scale solar, wind turbine or hydro renewable energy generation technology by paying for the electricity they generate.
The Tasmanian scheme credits you for all the energy you generate from your renewable energy power system and feed back into the electricity grid. Your own electricity usage is metered separately and you are charged for this at the appropriate tariff rate by Aurora Energy.
Key eligibility
The Tasmanian buyback scheme is available to Aurora customers with new and existing eligible renewable power connections. To be eligible you must:
- be an Aurora electricity customer
- use an Aurora Preferred or Clean Energy Council accredited Renewable Energy Supplier to install your renewable energy power system
- connect a renewable energy power system of up to 3 kilowatts in capacity to the electricity network (for systems above 3 kilowatts call Aurora).
Homeowners, renters and landlords are eligible to apply provided they are responsible for the electricity bill. If you’re not the owner of the property you must have the owner’s approval to fit the renewable energy power system.
A number of other conditions apply. Check your eligibility on the Aurora Energy website.
Items covered
The buyback scheme is available to customers with new and existing renewable energy system connections.
The feed-in tariff you will be paid is 22.648 cents per kilowatt hour—the same rate that you are charged for electricity you use.
You only pay for the electricity you use that is over and above what your renewable energy power system produces. If the amount of electricity you produce exceeds the amount of electricity you use, the difference will be credited to your account at the same rate that you purchase electricity from Aurora.
You could also be eligible for financial assistance to help with the cost of installing a small-scale solar system under the Australian Government's Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Next steps
Make sure that you understand the program information before you purchase a renewable energy generation system.
Feed-in credits or payments you receive may have implications if you receive any Centrelink or other benefit payments, they may also be considered as assessable income by the Australian Taxation Office.
