HEAT energy advisory team

The Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT) provides free independent advice to help you save energy, save money and make your home more comfortable. You can get advice over the phone, or book in for a free consultation or workshop.

HEAT Energy Audit and rebate

The HEAT Energy Audit is a comprehensive home energy assessment undertaken at your home by the independent Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT). The audit provides you with a detailed report outlining practical actions you can take to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient, as well as reduce your household energy costs. The home audit costs $30 and is free for holders of a pensioner concession card.

Homeowners or landlords who spend at least $2,000 on implementing the priority energy efficiency recommendations listed in their audit report will be eligible for a $500 rebate from the ACT Government, plus a refund of the $30 audit fee.

Key eligibility

All ACT residents can contact HEAT for free advice over the phone, or to book a free consultation or workshop.

To be eligible for the home energy audit and the $500 rebate, your home must be:

• Located in the Australian Capital Territory.
• Built before 1996.
• Free standing or semi-detached.

Homeowners, renters and landlords are eligible for these programs. If you are renting, any rebates will need to be claimed by your landlord.

You may be eligible for other government rebates but will not be able to receive this rebate if you have already received one for a similar item or improvement e.g. insulation or solar hot water.

You will also have to agree to provide your energy bills for up to a year before and after the audit so the improvements in energy use can be evaluated.

Items covered

Following your home energy audit, and depending on the items listed on your home audit report, you could be eligible for a rebate on a range of items and home improvements including:

• Ceiling insulation, including a top up of existing insulation.
• Underfloor and cavity wall insulation.
• Window pelmets.
• Lined block-out curtains (or equivalent blinds).
• double-glazed windows, including window treatments that achieve a similar effect, such as plastic film.
• Insulation of hot water pipes.
