Overview

The LPG Vehicle Scheme offers grants of $2,000 towards the purchase of a new vehicle already fitted with LPG or a grant of $1,250 for the LPG conversion of a new or used vehicle. The grant for LPG conversions will be reduced to $1,000 from 1 July 2012 for the duration of the scheme to 30 June 2014.

The LPG Vehicle Scheme only applies to vehicles registered for private or family use.

By converting to LPG, there may be a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in air pollution emissions from your car. The outcome depends on a range of factors including the type of LPG system fitted, the age and model of the car.

Key eligibility

To be eligible for a grant, you must:

• have purchased a new LPG vehicle or made an LPG conversion after 1 July 2009
• lodge an application within 12 months from the date of LPG conversion or date of purchase of a new LPG vehicle
• use the vehicle for private use.

If you converted a registered vehicle to LPG, your application form must include copies of:

• your vehicle registration papers
• proof that you've paid for the parts and installation of the LPG conversion kit or a new LPG vehicle
• proof of identity, for example your current driver’s licence.

If you purchased a new vehicle fitted with LPG before first registration, your application form must include copies of:

• your vehicle registration papers showing you're the registered owner
• proof that you've paid for the vehicle, for example a contract of sale
• proof of identity, for example your current driver's licence.
  

You can only apply for one grant every 3 years. However, this requirement can be varied under special circumstances.

Items covered

The LPG Vehicle Scheme provides assistance for:

• purchase of a new LPG motor vehicle
• purchase of parts and installation of LPG conversion kit for a new or used petrol or diesel motor vehicle.

From 1 July 2011 the LPG Vehicle Scheme will be capped at 25,000 eligible claims paid in a year (1 July to 30 June) for the duration of the scheme.
