Insulation can make your home much easier to keep warm and cool, keeping down your energy costs. See our information on why insulation is important. Ceiling insulation is particularly important, but you can also insulate walls, floors and water pipes.
It is usually easier to install insulation - especially for floors and walls - when you are building or renovating, although it is possible to retrofit at any time.
Research your requirements
- Find out if you already have any insulation in your home. If you don’t know, check your building report if you have one or have an expert check your home for you.
- Find out the best type of insulation for your home. See Your Home Technical Manual - Insulation and Your Home Technical Manual - Insulation installation as a good starting point.
- If you are building or renovating talk to your builder, insulation expert or local council about minimum insulation requirements and recommendations for your area.
Contact insulation installers
- Talk to different installers and suppliers about your options and get several written quotes which include the R-values to ensure you get the right insulation for the best price. You can speak to builders or insulation installers for advice.
- It is important to install insulation correctly. Check that your installer is accredited. Qualified installers will be aware of safety issues and will install insulation correctly.
- Ask suppliers about any additional costs that may not be included in the quote such as covers to keep insulation away from downlights and other safety enclosures for electrical and fire safety.
Get your insulation installed
- Arrange a time for installation. Talk to your installer about how long it will take and what preparations you may need to do like moving or covering furniture.
- Talk to your installer about removing rubbish responsibly.
- Enjoy your comfort and energy savings.
